This animation of the polio virus (picornavirus family) shows this small RNA virus and the various components of its protein shell. The protein shell animated here surrounds the virus's short RNA genome, which contains the entirety of genetic material needed for the assembly of new generations of viral progeny. This animation -- a citation of PDB entry 2plv (type 3 poliovirus, sabin strain of type-3 poliovirus)-- reveals the 4 different peptide subunits of the capsid, subunits VP1, VP2, VP3 and VP4. Each of these subunits has been assigned a different color to better illustrate their spatial arrangement.
