Thanks for sharing this...I grew up in the little house on the hill behind the store. I have so many memories...stocking coolers at the store, swimming at the bridge, 4-h at the library.

@ldaulaire Wow. We used to own the W. Hartford Store. My kids spent summers tubing and jumping off the old iron bridge. So sad!

thanks for sharing! -- Wonder how my old house is doing?? Doubleday's -- 4 houses up past the store??

My parents live upriver in South Royalton, and got stuck on the west side of the river - all the bridges and road access to where they are got completely washed out. They can get out now by going up and over the hill into Pomfret and then over to Rt 4, but every other route in and out is gone

Wow! Looks like the water level must have been very close to the '27 flood.

Wow! - thanks for sharing
Thank you for your views/posts. Our little village is so devastated. The store, library, and many, houses badly damaged. The volunteers and stories are amazing. story from a local volunteer: An AT (Appalachian train) hiker from NJ named "Light Foot" walked into West Hartford today, put down his pack, picked up a shovel and began helping dig out the foot deep mud in the basement of a flooded house. When he was thanked for helping he simply said "You looked like you could use the help." :o)

I took this at 6am on Monday, August 29. The water crested and the bridge broke some time between midnight and 4am. I wasn't there to see it because of safety concerns: around 10:30pm the power lines were starting to come down and a transformer blew.
