the only thing that the 2009 version did better was the chemistry between the hijacker and the cop.

The 70s one follows John Godey's book very closely, it's like if they make any major changes then the people who read the source material will hate them.

Great review! :) I love that movie! Haven't seen the remake yet. Have you seen the other Walter Matthau crime movie "The Laughing Policeman"?

this version is WAY better than the new one, this one has the old 1970's eerie feel to it to up the suspense, and the constant darkness in the tunnel makes it all the more creepier. (rottentomatoes rated it as a 100% "fresh"!)
now if you'd excuse me, I've got a train to catch...

Great review man. The 1974 version looks good and I think I'm gonna get it sometime. If you are interested in other 70's action flicks check out Assault on Precinct 13( 1976). It's directed by John Carpenter who went on to direct Halloween and The Thing.
