This is "Joseph Smith," a version of the LDS hymn "Praise to the Man" sung to an arrangement by Kim McCall of the original music based on the folk tune "Star of the East" with the original lyrics by William W. Phelps (1792-1872) written on the occasion of the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844) in Hancock County Jail, Carthage, Illinois June 27, 1844. The lyrics and music have long since been changed in the official LDS hymnal to a more upbeat, celebratory, and friendly style.

Performance of the song to the original tune commemorates the deep sorrow felt by the early church members at the martyrdom of their prophet, and also their faith in God that Joseph was now free from persecution and was receiving his heavenly reward, or in the words of the hymn, that "death cannot conquer the hero again."

Performed by the Menlo Park Ward choir of Menlo Park, California under the direction of Kim McCall.

  • This is beautiful. I was familiar with the original lyrics and the melody of "Star of the East", but the arangement actually med me weep. This was touchingly deep and very very strong. Thank you, all of you.
