@TheSquelzy Firstly Cobb doesn't say that. Dom says it to Ariadne. Secondly, he doesn't say the totem must be untouched by other people. He says that you shouldn't allow other people to touch it. Having someone else touch your totem doesn't stop it from working, it just means that they might learn the unique weight and feel of it, and therefore may be able to more accurately replicate it in a dream in order to fool you into believing you are still awake.

.... You do realise that the spinning top never really worked - let me explain.
The spinning top was originally Mal's, and Cobb says that one must choose a totem untouched by other people - therefore it never worked!
