This is a brief slide of waitsbeads and a couple of the reasons why they are worn. Waistbeads are traditionally worn under the clothing and the reasons one wears waist beads varies throughout the many unique cultures that exist They are worn for femininity, protection, attraction, fashion, spirituality, rites of passage completion or just to be wearing another piece of jewelry. You don't' have to have a small waist to adorn yourself with waistbeads. They are worn by many different wombmen of varying cultures ages and sizes.
@cuteuniqwa Why not? For the same reasons as everybody else out there. The poster added a few reasons in the description, spirituality, protection, rights of passage, w/e. Did you think waist beads are only for people of a particular race or something?

Could they be considered as an engagement symbol, if put by the man, to his woman before they marry?

@theherdmentality all the while, i DO want to say that yes, a whole lot of people are acting the part and ain't doing their share. and that i do hear you. we both wanna see a healed and self sufficient afrika, and it takes more than money or waistbeads to achieve this....this sister right here? she's real, and she ain't bullshitting she is raising the kind of children that are going to have the sense to do the things you are speaking of. and that was the heart of what i was saying. bless you.

@theherdmentality brother/sister, i have built schools with my bare hands in zimbabwe, tended to orphan infants in at othandweni in south africa (as a teenager), rubbed my elders' tired feet swollen from working too many hours for people like jolie and clooney! my momma done built more than a few wells in ghana...DID YOU SEE ANY MEDIA COVERAGE?!! If you are looking to quantify images by advertisements how can we grow? M.J. gave the most to Africa, though he had not a clue of his african beauty

@jinalanguniafrika she isn't discarding african culture, because that seems to be the only thing she does take....i'm sick to the point of vomitting every time I watch tv seeing black americans celebrate their "africanness" in many ways, but when it comes to doing the REAL work in africa, the only hopes the africans have is in George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, and the other whites that spend their time and money helping those people, not just dressing up in their clothes and wearing their beads...

@jinalanguniafrika Look, i can tell by your name that you really just want to preach, and not to actually comprehend what others are saying and to respond coherently to them. so again, all i'm saying is, don't call yourself an africn cause your skin matches and you like their jewelry......show some goddamn solidarity! HELP THOSE PEOPLE if they really are YOUR PEOPLE...don't just identify wihth them cause you like their beads and you're both black.....that's what I'm trying to say.

@theherdmentality you have a very direct way of typing, it is easy for me to understand and it ain't over my head...how don't you know this woman is an afrikan! How can you tell so easily what this sister is discarding of afrikan culture? this is the danger of stereotyping! our whole diaspora is hurting...in france, america, panama, brazil, germany, boganvilla, new guinea, haiti etc. please don't be fooled by the fluent english. we are used for currency here! our plight ain't for being "cute"!
