  • Umm, they didn't save her. She sank.

  • My father served in the forward radio room during Coral Sea and Midway. He told me many things about the battle and life on board. The captain of the I-168 got a hero's welcome back in Japan. The CV-5 was a badass to them! He passed 4-3 this year, and was the very last survivor.

  • @neferkheperre Thanks for sharing that with us. You must be very proud of the part he played in 2 historic battles. These battle's changed the course of WWII in the Pacific. It's amazing that she was even able to sail after the damage she took in the Coal Sea. Quite a testament to the ship & crew.

Sorry for the loss of your father. There are so few of the "Greatest Generation" left.

  • My grandfather, Donald L. Kinnamon, worked in the boiler rooms on both the USS Yorktown CV-5 (Coral Sea and Midway) and on USS Yorktown CV-10 during WWII. My mother told me he was also part of the volunteer crew that tried to put her on even keel to be towed back to Pearl Harbor when the USS Hammann was hit.

The USS Hammann was providing assistance to the volunteer crew by providing power to the bilge pumps to get the water out of the Yorktown at the time of the Japanese sub attack.

  • USS Yorktown suffered two devastating attacks from IJN Hiryu, the first one 18 Vall dive-bombers escorted by 6 Zeros, which succeded to hit three times with 500 lbs. bombs. The second one, leaded by Joichi Tomonaga, were 10 Kate torpedo-bombers escorted by 6 Zeros, which got two impacts on port side. The third one, Hiryu"s captain, Tomeo Kaku, made the option to make at sunset, with 5 Valls and 4 Kates. All remaining Zeros (6) would stay protect the japanese. Before this, the Dauntless attacked.
