Jug's lyrics are inspired by "The Queen and the Soldier", so I let that be my inspiration for the music as well. It's supposed to sound similar, though not the same, so I hope I've hit my mark. It's a little homage to Suzanne Vega's beautiful song from me and jug.

The Farmer and the Queen

the farmer went out to his fields once more
like he had done so many times before
and when he returned he found a child at his door
looking so all alone

well he fed her and dressed her and he shared his home
he grew to love her and he called her his own
he taught her his ways and he taught her his songs
she was the child he never knew

he came in from his fields from the plowing one day
but the girl was not waiting, she'd been taken away
the soldiers had come on the nineteenth of may
and took her to places unknown

the famine had come, there was nothing to eat
the people were starving, lying dead in the street
so the farmer left home, the Queen he would meet
and ask her for a small bit of mercy

he entered the palace in his old ragged clothes
he'd traveled so far away from his home
then he saw her, there on the throne
the girl he had raised towered above him

the farmer ran to her in open embrace
but the guards they stopped him there in his place
an imperial look came over her face
"take him away, I don't know him"

the farmer he died later that year
but not from the famine, that much was clear
he drowned in a pool of his own tears
it was a broken heart that killed him

well he fed her and dressed her and he shared his home
he grew to love her and he called her his own
he taught her his ways and he taught her his songs
she was the child he never knew
