20 June 2007. This isn't really a video, but more of audio recording of the bird. This bird has supposedly been present in this location for about a month. I and another friend had the opportunity to go confirm the bird. This is the first record for Northwestern California and is the farthest northern record for California. This the mexican subspecies, arizonae, which has (or does) breed in very small numbers in certain localities in Southern California.

  • Sounds a little different than the ones back east . A bit trillier .

  • Yeah, this is the southwestern Whip-poor-will, possibly a different species in the future. They sound very different from the eastern Whips.

  • Humboldt? "I have visual." "No, ah.."? Doing something illegal there, guys? ;)

  • Very cool.

  • Well I never thought there were whippoorwills here in New Mexico , but a couple of years ago a bird flew into the warehouse where I worked . Immediately I recognized it as a whippoowill , since I spent a great deal of my childhood in rural Kentucky . I went into the office while the other guys were watching it and googled and printed a picture of one and showed it to them and they were identical . Come to find out NM is on the migration route for a couple of species .

  • WTF? I thought it was the George Gerswhin song. Oh well.
