This video shows a dog in the middle to late middle stages of bloat. This dog, Roscoe, was saved. He had just arrived in a new home. The weather was warm but not hot, actually quite pleasant as this video was being filmed. Neither the person who brought the dog to this foster home nor the foster home had ever seen bloat and had no idea of what they were seeing. As soon as they realized something was wrong, he was rushed to the emergency vet. I can tell you from personal experience that we can talk to you about it forever, but until you actually experience it, it is very difficult to recognize. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and in this case the video is priceless for its teaching value. The person filming this very kindly allowed us to use it as an educational tool so other people can learn to recognize what is happening when a dog bloats.A voiceover was done to point out the various symptoms of bloat to those who may not recognize or understand what they are seeing. This dog bloated, but did not have gastric torsion. His stomach filled with air, but luckily for him, he made it to the vet in enough time that he had not torsed. They were able to deflate him and he is now home and doing well. Torsion occurs when the stomach flips over, cutting off the blood supply causing stomach tissue to start dying. Torsion requires very expensive surgery, and even if your dog survives the surgery, they may not survive the aftermath when the toxins from the dying tissue are released causing heart arrhythmias and sepsis. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take your dog to the vet if you think he may be bloating even if there is no swelling apparent yet. Sometimes there is no obvious swelling in the early stages; your dog just looks "fatter". They can take an x-ray to determine if your dog is in the early stages and treat him immediately. If the vet refuses to take an x-ray, INSIST upon it. This is YOUR dog. YOU know him very well and if the vet still refuses to take an x-ray, go elsewhere. The earlier it is caught, the better your dog's chances of living. For more info on symptoms go to

Susan, I am so sorry. I know how big a hole they can leave in your life when they go. That he lived to 14 is amazing !! Obviously you were very caring owners.

Thank you...this was our intention in putting it up. To show people what bloat looks like in the hopes it will save more dogs.

I saw this video about 5 mnths ago I thought it was very informative but didnt think too much of it. Yesterday I went to a friends house who had a 12 year old foster, dog wasn't feeling well she said. When I arrived I saw things that reminded me of this video. It was unmistakable. She immediately brought him to the vet and sadly he had to be put down, but thank you so much for uploading this. If I had not seen it we would not have known what it was and he would have suffered longer.

Thanks--we have 2 other Akitas and now we are obsessing over them to make sure they don't have any problems with the same thing. We are so heartbroken.

I'm sorry for your loss. My girl passed a few months ago from hip dysplasia. I am still lost without her. Akitas are such a treasure to be with. Just remember, He will always be with you and watching over you. I wish you well Susan.

A very useful video, my standard poodle became poorly last night and doing the exact thing this dog was doing in the video, I realised what it was and got him down the vets straight away, he had emergency surgery and this morning he is doing well. If your dog gets bloat, get it down the vet ASAP don't do any home remedies.

And at 14 I don't even know he could have survived surgery- he had some mini strokes 2 years ago when we were coming cross country to move from NY to AZ. He had a bad bite from one of our other Akitas last summer and lost so much blood. He had an anal tumor removed in July 2011, he had a fatty tumor in his chest we have had to monitor. He has been through so much and we were spoiled since we had snatched him from death before. Meantime our 13 yr old Akita is running around chasing our beagle pup

Susan, even if your dog had been bloating two weeks ago and was diagnosed as bloating, he still may have bloated again. He may also have had colitis. At 14, their immune systems are falling apart and they are prey to any number of issues. If what she gave him allowed him to defecate, then she may have been right and he bloated two weeks later. Age increases the chances of bloating. and at his age, he was a prime candidate.

We have always taken him to the vet and always had everything done we thought he needed. We took him to the vet and I think she didn't diagnose it properly because I was reading if they get an attack they are likely to get another one and the reason we had taken there was the trying to defecate and he didn't have and he swelling and was in pain, she said it was possible colitis and the medicine we thought worked. It's weighing heavy as too much a coincidence.
