He and Josephine Baker had a nasty feud about the Stork Club incident when Miss Baker was denied service there.

In the earliest shows, the men didn't always stand up when the guest left

@tallpaul521 Absolutely. The truth is somewhere in the middle. A reading of his autobiography, published 3 years after his death confirms this. Makes goody two shoes Jack Paar look bad.

I had the same thought... even the men didn't stand up... Mr. Steve Allen, ALWAYS did...
-
@leftcoastjoe By thunder, you're right - both gents didn't stand when he met the panel at the end! I don't recall ever seeing that before. It would be interesting to discover if it was perceived as a snub by Winchell and the press at the time. Since this is so unusual, it's hard to believe it was just an accident...but I could be wrong, of course.

W for WHAT W for a WANKER

Winchell, the narrator of each episode of "The Untouchables..."
...who did it with such gravitas that some viewers thought that they were watching a documentary.

hmmm...first show I ever saw where the gents didn't stand...
When Winchell died only his daughter came to his funeral. She died shortly afterward of pneumonia. His son committed suicide. One screwed up family
