I'm a korean. Arirang.....actually, as u feel, this song presents korean's sadness.
We korean call it 'Han' which means korean's sad feeling or missing someone.
If u learn korean language, u can know what i mean.
But, u know even u dont know korean language, u can feel somewhat this song is very sad. right??

@liverpool1969100 Good you feel that way because I hate Denmark, they've killed so many of us during our countless wars, Cheers from Småland.
-
oooooh, i do wish I knew Korean, but even not being able to I got the biggest goosebumps when the audience joined in.
-
I want remember that there are not sad songs. Any kind of songs or music rich in melody and Harmony reach the Heart of pubblic, that is the most important. "If the world could only hear the power of the Harmony"!!!

@chamman1998 Each different area of the peninsula has their own distinct version of Arirang. Some are more lively, some are more solemn and some are more ballads like this one. This guy is incredible.
-
what version is this? my family always sings arirang while they're doing home chores and it sounds very strong accented, maybe it's because there from the north?
-
@djgukfan it is said that all East Asian ethnic came from one ancestor....
so, i think we shall be proud of this culture even though we're just Chinese, right?
thumbs up for arirang~

Pretty much every country in world had been invaded and colonized in some way. This song isn't meant for that, but expression of feelings and emotions. I think Korea have exaggerated a lot of their worst times. Colonized for 35 years and division cannot be worst than many countries today.
-
Yes, I know Korean history, every country in world had been invaded by foriegn peoples, 90% had been colonized and occupied (and yes that includes Japan too). Arirang is not about occupied or something like that, its about expression of your feelings. Arirang was made when lower class cannot express much to upper class. The class divison was pretty bad, but more worse can be seen in China and Japan societies.

i think so many countries have the same centiment with Korea - ireland, poland, greece and so many invaded, colonized during several centuries - so they think they are innocent sacrefice lamb, full of immotion. yes this is very good condition for beautiful, emotional art. especially music and literature - but i think we must know we have very wicked parts in ourselves..... the historical national grief sometimes can become fertilizer for fascism...i don;t want Korea to became Israel..
-
i was stationed in south korea in the 90s and i fell in love with this beutifull country and hi people.

@djgukfan There are many interpretations of this song but as u may know the main theme to arirang and many traditional korean music is "han". As a korean american it is my interpretation that han is a sense of grief, a wanting to express the emotions from oppression, and the recognition and acceptance of struggle. For the most part I believe arirang and other han oriented music is a song for hope that although we struggle, it is with this struggle that we strive to move on and endure life.

I think we Koreans a bit exaggerate the bad times in our history like our division. I think a unified Korea would be a much powerful country today.

@liverpool1969100 I am very glad you said that. Your Korean ethnicity will never change even though your nationality has. I have the greatest respect for the Korean people. No, I am not Korean but Chinese. Be proud my friend!

A wonderful and happy rendition of this beloved Korean folk song. I went ot Korea on business in 1985 and have been in love with the country, ever since. Returned again in 1997 and 2006; still have never lost my intrigue or fascination with this beautiful country. Strong willed, energetic, patriotic people who have forged their name on the the face of this world. Dae Han Min Guk, Han-Guk saram...Sa-rang-heyo! Thank you/Kam sa hamnida. Mitch
