Jim Corgel discusses how IBM's Cloud Services such as Cloud Service Provider Platform and Provisioning Applications improve customer service for telecom service providers.

I'm Jim Corgel, I'm the General Manager of IBM Developer Relations. Next year, IBM will be a 100-year-old business. That means for 10 decades we've managed to survive by listening primarily to what our customers want and what our customers need. My job in IBM is to work with the translation of those customer needs to over 100,000 IBM Business Partners around the world so that they can participate with us in that market opportunity. Communication service providers are not your father's telco anymore. They've been managing, building, and delivering internet capability for some 15 years now and now the cloud computing capability and explosion around the world offers a vast new set of opportunities. So, CSPs working on the IBM Cloud Service Provider platform or CSP2, those new modern efforts of nationwide and global telecommunications providers to deliver the kinds of services that large enterprises and small businesses around the world are looking for, that's what we're all about today. And so in the CSP industry, what we're finding is that there's an enormous amount of opportunity for our partners -- cloud builders, people who build data centers securely and reliably so that cloud service providers can extend their market opportunity are very interested in joining the team. I remember years ago when shrink-wrapped ISVs or application providers were wondering how to make that transition from being just a package provider of software to a real service provider provisioning the agent. And we're seeing an enormous opportunity for those ISVs that have made that bridge and have crossed that gap and are now active members and active providers of real business applications that our CSPs can deliver to their clients. There are a wide variety of unique individual technology companies that can help service providers extend their infrastructure. There are some unique requirements for infrastructure privacy, infrastructure reliability, and flexibility in some of our growth markets. And so CSPs are going to turn to those technology providers and say, how does our intellectual property along with our friends from IBM work with you? There are consultants who are industry experts in what cloud service provisioning works best and will go the farthest into the marketplace and so they'll be active participants as well. Communication service providers are going to turn to IBM and our business partners for a number of things. First of all, building new applications. IBMs network of innovation centers [onscreen text here reads "40 IBM innovation centers worldwide"] around the world in over 40 major market cities are physical places where IBM technology, IBM technologists, experienced developers and IBM consultants can work with our local business partners to make that local ecosystem come alive for those communication service providers who see a business opportunity. That's a real place for partners to build and design new applications that can run on IBM's newly announced CSP2. The second thing people are going to say is, well, how do I take what I know today I can do, and how do I get together with an IBM Business Partner to take those [onscreen text here reads "merging public and private cloud to deliver services"] public cloud capabilities, merge them into my private cloud capabilities so that I can deliver those easily recognizable and available public capabilities inside a firewall for a major enterprise or a small business. ISVs are going to continue to want to extend their brand with our CSP partners as they look for specific industry applications around the world that can make sense and help change the life of a marketplace participant. And even universities, universities delivering cloud-like services to students and teachers so that infrastructure costs get reduced dramatically, provisioning becomes rather simple anymore and that students can learn the skills necessary to help move forward with our business partners, with our clients and with these computing(?) service provider partners to change the way the planet works. So there's a wide variety of market opportunity for IBM's portfolio of business partners. There's an opportunity of almost $90 billion in the next four years in cloud service provisioning applications. And every CSP that we talk to wants to understand what the capabilities are of IBM's Business Partners to extend IBM technology in partnership with the CSP so that we can capture as much of that market opportunity as rightfully ours.
