Dopo gli anni settanta, i cosiddetti "Asylum Years", Waits si cimenta in un ambizioso progetto di Francis Ford Coppola, musicando il film "One from the heart", insieme a Crystal Gayle, nel 1982 (occasione in cui conobbe la futura moglie). Il film risulterà un flop al botteghino.

La svolta professionale della carriera di Waits coincide con il trasferimento alla casa discografica Island Records, dove Tom produce tre lavori, noti anche come "La trilogia di Frank", nel corso degli anni ottanta. Iniziata con Swordfishtrombones del 1983, passando per Rain Dogs nel 1985, considerati due dei suoi massimi capolavori, fino ad approdare all'opera teatrale Franks Wild Years nel 1987. Questi album segnano la totale rottura col passato, nel quale la musica era prevalentemente pianistica o, comunque, di stampo abbastanza jazzato: introduce nella sua musica strumenti poco usati come il mellotron e crea canzoni con ritmi molto più percussionistici e "sghembi" rispetto al passato, pur mantenendo diversi elementi classici in brani come Time od Innocent When You Dream. Principalmente su questi tre album sarà basato il CD live, Big Time, del 1988.

La distanza a livello compositivo rispetto agli anni settanta è netta ma non per questo infierisce su di esso; anzi proprio la sua inventiva e la sua voglia di esplorare raggiungono il culmine probabilmente in questo periodo produttivo, in cui Waits si dedica anche a diversi altri progetti sia cinematografici che teatrali.

heart and soul deep moving masterpiece reminding anyone they are an imperfect and sometimes hurtful, forgiving and sentimental, that they are human, only human. Beautiful, most beautiful.

This grabs me by the throat and makes it hard to breathe. He is the voice of hte human condition, the ache of lonliness and loss inside us all, that unites us all.  I can't stop the tears when I listen to this.
