If it were really possible to "sell your soul" to achieve stardom and success, every lowlife and crack-whore and ruthless dictator in the world would do it. Why would the "buyer" pass up great customers? All Bob Dylan did was what few of us have the tenacity or courage to do- he threw his life into creativity and music, wether success was the outcome or not. LIke Woody Guthry. He was completely absorbed in his music, so he achieved genius in what he was doing. Genius comes and goes, it is said.

Dylan is an artist. He is using a metaphor to describe how he gave up the comforts and security of a normal life for a life of fame and wealth. He can buy anything or anyone he wants, but he's locked in a cage and the world will always stick its nose into his business because he is Bob Dylan.

Robert Johnson did it first. And he DID become the best blues musician to ever live. Still is. Sadly, he died at 27.
