Unfortunately, in this day and age, you just don't know who's going to be armed...either with a firearm, or knife...just remember, by most states' self defense laws, an unarmed assailant CAN be shot, and it's still considered self defense! But I really do agree with you...it's better to take a beating than go to prison!

A rational respectable member of a society, should be able to own, know how to SAFLEY use and protect themselves with a fire arm, period! I'm not saying on the fricken streets and shit, but at home absolutley! And especially women and elderly folks! But take a class and learn the right way. That's what I think anyway.

Guns should be use with handle and care. I will NEVER shoot anyone or any animals as long as they don't attack/assault me, my family members, or anyone who's innocent.
