I happened upon a website proposing that the original Robert Johnson recordings were sped up for a variety of possible reasons: operator error, or an attempt to change the tempo and pitch for marketability. I heard some clips on the site, but they wanted you to pay £5 for a CD of Robert Johnson's music slowed down, which I frankly find disingenuous. So I applied the theory with Garageband - the original track will be posted as a video response. The original track is slowed down 20%, and the pitch is dropped 300 cents or 3 semitones, using the stock GB processing. The only effect is the Multi-Band Compressor on the stock 'Analog' setting.

You can hear how relaxed this version is, how natural, compared to the original, with it's kind of hillbilly warble where a blues vocal vibrato should be, and a more manic feel to the guitar work instead of a relaxed, smooth blues performance. While I believe the processing could be done in a much better manner, I myself feel that this is close to how the original performance would have sounded before being sped up in the mastering stage, for whatever reason.

  • This sounds fake, ridiculous.

  • i mean, the old delta style was not known for its slow feel, and if robert johnson at 27 sounded that old then shit

  • there was 2 recording sesions..so youd think if it was sped up they would of fixed

  • Way too damn slow. Sounds like warped vinyl on a victrola lol.

  • too far slowed

  • I'm not trying to toe the line, and I definitely appreciate your reasoning but this is slowed down. Perhaps the percentage was smaller?

  • Even a starved Dog with no teeth in his mouth can hear that this is slowed down unnatural.

A good way to make money for the fool who wants to buy.

  • this tempo does not sound natural

  • nope don't buy this at all
