Sometimes people do build models entirely out of aluminium as per it's full size counterpart but it's extremely uncommon and a very specialised buisness. Most of theese are not made of Balsa - most are moulded out of Fibreglass or Carbon Fibre.

It's fiberglass or carbon fiber.

From what I've been told, it crashed on Sunday of the TOP GUN 2009 event. I was there Fri and Sat, but no Sun, so I missed it. In a way, Im glad I missed it. I loved the A4.

are these jets all balsa planes? or do some of them have like a metal outerlayer?

They are mostly Balsa and fiberglass. Im sure some of the guys used metal parts and other supplies. The wings are typically covered by a plastic like covering. Such as Monokote or Econokote or other such covering. But actual metal outerlayer, probably not on any of these, too heavy.
