One of Liszt's later and less technically demanding pieces. He composed La Lugubre Gondola No. 2 after the death of his son in law, Richerd Wagner (yes, the famous composer). This was part of Liszt's "Late Period" when he began focusing on death and funeral music. It was also a time where he explored harmony and tonality.
Played by: Bertrand Giraud
The person who wrote that this is a technically undemanding piece never tried to play it and create the morbid atmosphere--Many types of challenges--this one is of tonal color---and sustaining a legato line with only sparing melodic notes----

what an excellent post! the pictoral aspect of Liszt's profoundly great music is beautifully enhanced - water, eternity, grand architecture... yes very scary. Thank you!
