Waiting to Begin Again (Chapter 18) (Part 1)

So i didn't get comments but i don't know when the next time i'll be able to post is so i figured i'd do this before I left for DC tomorrow morning. I'm feeling generous and I wanted some kind of cliff so this has two parts.

"What are you doing?" he asked.
"What are you doing?" I repeated back, kind of surprised he was there.
"I asked you first."
"Do your parents know you're here?" I asked, ignoring his response, which, if he wasn't 8, I'd have laughed in his face over.
"They know I'm wandering," he said shrugging. "They figure I can't get in too much trouble as long as I stay in the stadium." He dropped his scooter, obviously planning on staying.
"They'd be surprised."
"Yeah," he said laughing. Hm, maybe this little kid was cooler than I had thought. "So what are you doing?"
"Watching TV. Trying to pass the time till I can leave."
"I know what you mean." I looked over at him. I hadn't realized, but he was in a very similar situation to mine. He was dragged along on this tour, all he could do was watch and wait around, and he couldn't do anything a normal 8 year old did, like go to a real school. Sure, he was more excited about the whole tour thing than I was, but he still didn't have a choice whether to go on it or not. "Are you good at skateboarding?" He was standing over my board, which was leaned up against the other side of the couch from where I was sitting.
"Eh, good enough."
"Will you teach me?"
"Huh?"
"I've always wanted to learn, but I never got very far. So will you teach me?"
I looked him over, deciding whether to do it or not. He looked desperate almost. He was pretty cool, and I could use something to pass the time. After all, nothing was on TV at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. "Sure, I guess, let's go out into the hall."

{Nick's P.O.V.}
We heard laughing as we walked down the hall on our lunch break. I was kind of surprised to hear it was Hayley. When we approached the dressing rooms, we saw Hayley helping Frankie onto a skateboard as they both laughed. "It's all right, Frank, it takes some time," she said, ruffling his hair a little.
Without a word, Joe, Kevin, and I dodged behind the corner to watch a little. Hayley let go of Frankie hands and said, "Try again."
I was shocked when Frankie actually popped an ollie [a/n basically jumping with the board if you don't know] and landed it. I was even more shocked by how lively Hayley was.
"That's it, bud! Nice job. You're a natural," she praised. [a/n i wish it was that easy for me to land my first ollie]
"I...I can't believe I did it."
"Then convince yourself and do it again," she coached.
"Wow, how'd he get through to her?" I whispered to Joe and Kevin, surprised.
"Maybe he wasn't trying to," Joe said.
"Huh?"
"Maybe he wasn't trying so hard to get through or to fix her. She didn't feel threatened to have to face her past, so she was okay. Plus he found a neutral topic that she could get excited about. She seems to really like skateboarding."
"Why are you so smart all of a sudden?" Kevin asked.
"Thanks for that," Joe replied sarcastically.
"So what'd we do?" I asked.
"We take a lesson from our little brother."
