Social system betraying country should be altered -- President
January 17, 2011
President Rajapaksa has said that the social system which betrays the nation for political mileage should be altered. Commemorating Thai-Pongal with the Northern polity, the President said that a unitary Sri Lankan society which will be dedicated towards the uplifting of the country irrespective of all differences, should be built.
A colourful event marking Thai-Pongal was held at the Doraiappa Stadium in Jaffna presided by the President. It was held this morning. The people who thronged the stadium from all directions of the North extended a rousing welcome to the President. Among the people's representative was Minister Douglas Devenanda. The Northern polity extended their gratitude to the proud State leader who brought rays of development to their lives wiping out the psychosis of the three-decade terrorism. Many Hindu cultural events added much colour to this event.
The President was also extended the blessing on behalf of Thai Pongal.
The President said that he trusted that all of them, as adults and as a nation, must be committed to protect this culture and impart it to the posterity, while effecting development to the motherland. For 30 years the country was on a backward trend. This era has been ended. No one in this country can live alone. Everyone is a child of Mother Lanka, whether they are Sinhalese, Tamils, Burghers or Muslims. This is one generation in one country. Therefore, the President emphatically stated that a responsibility is vested in them.
Addressing the function in Tamil, the President asserted that the "Uthuru Wasanthaya" mega development programme was being mooted for the welfare of all civilians of the North. He commented that the Government had accepted the responsibility of the development of the North and the South at the same time for the benefit of the posterity.
After the blessings Pooja, the President participated in a special public meeting at the Doraiappa Stadium. He handed over the required grants for Northern development, to Governor G.A. Chandrasiri. He also presented laptops to Jaffna University students. The President also conferred an honorary title to veteran Tamil national musician Dr. Darshanan. While the Hindu clergy was honoured, tractors were dished out to Northern farmers.
