they both were getting hit with big shots- so ref stops in a little early, quarry looked beaten- these guys took to many head punches-it adds up later.
fight should have been stopped a round earlier, no wonder he suffered from dementia. most of Norton's loses came in the latter part of his career. Foreman knocked out almost everyone he fought
@dlebs - the "easy prey" was outside my main point, but if you study fights that Norton lost quickly, you'll notice once a big puncher staggered him he was fairly easy to finish off.
On the contrary, Shavers dropped Larry Holmes with one of the hardest rights probably in the history of boxing. Yet Holmes recovered and managed to stop Shavers via TKO. My point here is that if you stagger Norton early, you'll probably finish him off early. Try to box him and you're in for a tough fight.
@tylersfs Yep, Norton is off-balance, not hurt. I'm convinced the followup hook from Quarry would've been a flash knockdown, but the ref helps Norton get his balance back!!!
@dlebs - I've noticed that too. But in looking this over several times through the years, and taking into account the entire fight, I believe this was slippage on something wet in the ring. Also I would think that if one of Quarry's shots had staggered Norton twice, then Norton would have been easy to take out. Check out his fights against Shavers, Foreman and Cooney. Norton was easy prey once he was staggered.
Instead he kept fighting strong, and didn't "stagger" again. It was a slip.
WHAT THE HELL was the ref doing @ 1:49!?

quarry came in a bit heavier than usual, at 207. seems a bit sluggish.

@tylersfs ... I don't agree with your "easy prey" sentence though - those guys were huge powerhouses who put him away.
