The choir of Kings College Chapel, Cambridge sing the lovely Christmas carol, In The Bleak Midwinter. The wonderful words of Christina Georgina Rossetti are sung to a beautiful setting by Gustav Holst.

1. In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

2. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

3. Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breast full of milk
And a manger full of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

4. Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air,
But only His mother
In her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

5. What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

  • "Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day..." my favourite verse. If I may say this myself, the Hallé Youth Choir, of which I am a member, sing this one very well at Christmas :)

  • @tekno1393... well said ! but spare yourself the trouble !

  • I laughed when they said ass :p I'm 12! What do ya expect?

  • How beautiful and lovely. It's not only a Christmas hymn but an Advent hymn too. Thank you for sharing this with the world. Jim

  • One of the great emotive carols. Anyone not moved by this is far from themselves and needs to return home.

  • @lunaticonthegrass111 I agree with you, but in such instances, it is the responsibility of the choral director to create nuance through dynamics and tempo changes. It wouldn't matter as much That each verse is arranged the same if the verses were at least presented differently.

  • It's a bit of a shame that each verse has practically the same arrangement, as it makes things a bit boring. But that's just me, and, in a way, this version reflects the simplicity of it all.

  • im singing this in my choir :) my fav

  • It doesn't get better than this! The world's greatest choir and the world's greatest Christmas carol. Thank you.

  • @pwthcim Learn the definition of melody, oh and spell it right. Then we'll talk about how stupid your comment is.

  • Anyone know who wrote this particular arrangement?

  • @pskidmore1986 Oy vay. You call this siging? My giflete fish has more meledy.

  • I too first came across this hymn way back, but for me it was in the mid fifties, when I was about six or seven, I was at Rainow C of E primary school in Cheshire in the UK. My little school of just three classrooms has now been converted into a house and I now live in Australia. This hymn however still takes my back to that little school with the joys of winter and snow that can only be appreciated by the very young

  • Beautiful! I watch these young boys and young men sing. So beautifully devoted to the carol and hymn. The Lord bless their hearts with the faith of which they sing, and bless them with such devotion to this Gospel that their lives become a living carol to our Lord.

  • Awesome performance!!!!!!!!!

  • With this wonderful music and to me best performance a merry Xmas and a very happy new year to all of you from Vienna, Austria

  • This is so Jesus's Christmas....happy Christ mas folks! xx
