Bing Maps: New Spatial Streetside Photos w/ Flickr

This new Bing maps feature takes tagged photos from Flickr, and relates them to our Streetside imagery to show images matched to their original context. See if you're really going to get a good sunset at that B&B youre looking to book, or check out the crowds on a Saturday morning at Pike Place Market in Seattle.

The BIG BIG problem with all this is that it's totally random data crowd-sourcing. You either get this immersive visual rapport through augmented details harnessed from peoples' photos around the world; or you get areas of the world that rarely get updated due to lack of people-taken photos. The latter will happen outside the heart of MOST capital cities, which makes the appeal of this project limited and unfulfilled.

What! The map functions, meaning navigation, are useful. Everything else is just a gimmick. "Yes they have a road map, but ours has glitter!"

I just tried Bing after watching this video. 2 stars, Two thumbs down and a D-. Google maps was made for the people. These guys are the people who cut you of on the freeway.

I feel like this technology should be a lot bigger than it is - more appreciated and utilized, u know? I remember seeing his TED presentation back in 2007 and couldn't wait to see this stuff in action.
