this video features the latest rough cut of my Macross Plus AMV through the eyes of iMovie HD 6 (iLife 07). i want to show off how iMovie processes the videos with the various effects such as cross-dissolves, fade in, fade out, and titling. if more people see how videos and effects are arranged in iMovie, perhaps more will join in on the fun of editing videos especially if making AMVs. along with iMovie, there are a handful of other apps used to make this AMV possible:

with Handbrake 0.9.1, i am able to rip a high quality MPEG4 off the DVDs using the "Quicktime" preset . **caveat** the "Quicktime" preset could take up to a whole day to rip one hour of DVD video, but its so worth it when you see how good the MPEG4 video looks. it also has a useful feature of resizing the out-sourced video to meet the required resolution for your project.

with Streamclip 1.9, i am able to transcode MPEG4 to DV format. this is important because iMovie edits DV natively. if you simply import MPEG4 into iMovie HD, iMovie will just transcode it to Apple's Intermediate Codec (AIC), which could take a long while. and its not even worth it, because scrubbing through the video to capture the clips you want with AIC is slow and choppy. especially if you are working on a Mac Mini. Quicktime Pro can transcode MPEG4 to DV format too, but StreamClip seems to do a faster job, and has the useful ability to crop the video to get rid of any dark edges.

with Quicktime Pro 7, i am able to easily adjust brightness, contras, and color saturation. this is mostly for post production after i have completed my final cut.

because i have moved over to Final Cut Express 4 (FCE4) to finish my M.P. AMV, i figured i'd share what my video looks like in iMovie HD 6. both the latest rough cut and final are similar in the editing. but thanks to the advance features in FCE4, the final cut has a much better (higher) video quality, some simple, yet neat, visual effects through video layering. also it has a greater ability to fine tune the fade in's and out's along with the transitions.

about the AMV itself:
1. you may notice some new scenes i have added to emphasize the romantic element of the love triangle between the three main characters.
2. if you pay attention you'll notice several large chunks of video sequences that fit into the verses of the song perfectly with no editing.
3. a true 640x480 (edge to edge) video resolution thanks to Handbrake with a little fine tuning from Streamclip.

the AMV featured here was edited (from scratch) using the following:
Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, 2GB MEM, 120GB HDD

  • listen i really want to make amvs on imovie and i can never understand when i look it up so could u at least try to help me understand

  • what do you mean by "i can never understand when i look it up ..."

  • is it avalible to downloaded?

  • sorry to tell you, but unfortunately it's not. the only video available to download is the final cut version.

  • Cool! We use imovie too! It is pretty awesome but I'm thinking of switching to final cut pro, do you know anything about it?

  • pro? no, express? you bet. i had to get it in order to render the final version. did you get to see it? in any case, you ought to look into Final Cut Express 4. it's so much better iMovie. for example FCE4 edits all video in their original file format. unlike iMovie which has to transcode imported movies into Apple's Intermediate Code which takes up time, and space on your hard drive. perhaps someday i'll get Final Cut Pro in the future.
