Cutting curved aluminum plate on ShopBot CNC machine using a router and 3/32" 2 flt. carbide endmill.
This was a hard aluminum, was cut from 8"dia. pipe. Total 4 passes to get through .125" (1/8") material.

  • Recently on a 3/4" piece, I used a spray oil and the shavings detached. After the first cut the lube will sit in the groove, so I could let it run unattended. It took 10 passes.

  • It's crucial to see the bits flying off or the aluminum just re-agglomerates in the groove.

  • Thanks!  It's a variable speed router, abt 5,000 rpm, .05" sec. No cooling.

  • Tip: When cutting soft aluminium use alcohol as a cutting lubricant. Makes for much cleaner cuts and you wont have stuff building up on the tool.

  • cutting path not clear and sharp , I think your aluminum's not hard enough like 6061 may be 50xx

  • Hey this is great! Would you mind sharing your spindle speed and cutting speed with us? It looks like you didn't use any cooling, is that correct?
