The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world? A new debate, presented from London by Zeinab Badawi
It stands up for the oppressed and offers spiritual succour to billions say the Church's supporters. But what about the Church's teachings on condoms, gay sex and women priests, ask the detractors.
Speaking for the motion, Archbishop John Onaiyekan and Anne Widdecombe MP. Speaking against the motion, Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry.
From Telegraph:
The voting gives a good idea of how it went. Before the debate, for the motion: 678. Against: 1102. Dont know: 346. This is how it changed after the debate. For: 268. Against: 1876. Dont know: 34. In other words, after hearing the speakers, the number of people in the audience who opposed the motion increased by 774.

I'll have a shot at this asshole @amaqula. History is very much a one-sided account and the Catholic Church was one of the wealthiest organizations in the world for nearly 1500 years. Thus they wrote the history books for over a millennium and we can (a priori, unfortunately) infer they were actually worse than history tells us. Atheists have no motivation to incite conflict, unlike Catholics - why would one wage war based on the absence of belief? Take your propaganda elsewhere.
Since separation of church and state is complete the West is now on a road to self obliteration via birth control! Instead of the paradise we were promised somehting akin to cultural and demographic death is taking place! Atheism is nothing more than wishful thinking!
Bring back the CATHOLIC STATE - secular nations are incapable of survival due to their ludcirous beliefs! Only the return of the Catholic state will resist the atheist curses of demographic wipeout and Islamisation!!
The Catholic Church didn't give us the 10 commandments. That was the Jews. The Archbishop. makes a good point. The 10 commandments (or at least 5-9), are common sense, and have been held by civilizations long before these commandments were written in the bible.
The old woman, a stooge of the insane superstition that have enslaved even the most intellectual, represents the arrogence and immaturity of our enemy. The power of humour must not be ignored. May it be used to inflict great damage later..
I love how Ann Wittecombe insulted that one guy who asked her about being an MP and not a priest as a woman. It's just so great how Catholics and other Christians get mad at you for not knowing beforehand how their silly Harry-Potter-esque circus works.
Stephen Fry is a man of honour. Homosexuality is love like any other, and should not be despised as morally evil. The enemy does not deserve the respect he gave them. It was not returned. Take no prisoners.
Notice how they never told them about the church's views on condoms and homosexuality.
You really only need one reason to be against the Catholic church: any institution that wants to send a wonderful human being like Stephen Fry to eternal suffering deserved nothing but condemnation.

You are a fucking idiot.
I'd respond with something more interlectual but words fail me.
