A short tribute to Rachel Carson.

What would have been the 100th birthday of the founder of the modern enviromental movement, passed without much notice.

Her book, "The Sea Around Us" (1951) is a must-read for those interested in marine biology, as well as "Log of the Sea of Cortez" by that more well-known marine biologist and novelist, John Stienbeck.

The music is Frühlingsrauschen Op.32 No.3 (Rustle of Spring) by the Norwegian composer Christian Sinding (1856-1941).

  • Scientist David Suzuki stated that "Silent Spring" written by Rachel Carson was an important influence on the direction his work would take.

Suzuki, in an interview discusses how during WW2, as a young child, he and his family (originally from Japan) were held for 4 yrs in a concentration camp at a mountain site.

During the time he spent on the mountain, he developed a love for nature and today is a proponent of responsibility not destruction of earth's natural resources.

  • Thanks for the information. I like David Suzuki.

  • Good thing she's long dead. If she wasn't, I'd shoot her myself.

  • I'm sure the petrochemical industry appreciates the support. There are many like gurumagoo.

  • You're ignorant.

  • Males like you should be hung by the balls. Rachel was a genius, unlike you, such a sad excuse for a living creature, go stroke your cock dumb bastard!

  • The science on which SILENT SPRING's case against DDT was based was crap. The real reason that the powers-that-be wanted DDT banned is that DDT was saving millions of black lives in Africa from malaria.

I suggest that the lives of people are worth more than that of birds, even if they're claims are correct, which they are not.

One more thing. We'd have no bedbug problem if DDT were available.

I don't trust the "experts"; they've lied to us time and time again. Get DDT!

  • The "Clean Air Initiative" and "Clean Water Initiative" from the Bush administration are ironic names.

  • Bush is responsible for the deaths of those who get cancer from industrial pollution. Carson saved lives. Environmentalists save lives!

  • She should have kept her mouth shut and continued to allow agribusness to poison our rivers, water, air, and kill our national symbol.
