WEVA News lands one of the first interviews with Ted Schilowitz, Leader of the Rebellion, Red Digital Cinema on the Red 4K camera at NAB 2006 for WEVA News Minute - (www.weva.com) by producer, Bruce Himmelblau of Blue Sky Video Productions (www.bsvp.com).
Even though the camera was still in development, it captured the attention of filmmakers, cinematographers, editors and the media. The introductory price of $17,500 (body only) for a 4K is amazing when compared to the professional tape based and tapeless cameras priced over $100,000 that only shot 1920x1080.
The camera is also designed to fit cinematography PL mount lenses as well as RED's own line of lenses.
In 2006, RED had a working model that had the guts of the camera mounted in a very understated wooden box.
Trivia: This video is the earliest interview on RED on the Internet.

bunkofurko, you really seem like the kind of person I used to dislike in The National Honor Society... I would walk in the room to a meeting and hear some "know-it-all" spouting off about how a photon has mass at relativistic speeds, well I had to break it to him that there was a third derivative called a "Jerk" (Like you) that explained how a photon simply does not have mass at the speed of light... Just saying, I don't really like you very much ;-)

I am currently editing a film that was shot on a RED Camera. And I must say, it is astounding how high the quality is. It looks just like film, and even surpasses it in some aspects. The shutter speed is perfect, and the colors are outstanding.

Che was shot on two of the first RED cameras, using very early builds of their firmware and software.
Today they're on a new build (build 20) that completely re-invents the camera. They rewrote the color science (which includes the debayering) which eliminated most of the noise in the blue channel, and has dramatically altered what that camera is capable of doing. The best part is that the new science can be applied to older footage as well, and make it look even better than before.

Also: Parts of Che did look good. I was more impressed with RED than I'd ever been, however I still don't think digital is as good as film **yet**.

It's interesting that we agree on film vs digital. Though your technical talk is way above my head. I'm not a DP amateur or professional. Just a fan and I study film sometimes.

Most of the best ones have spent decades working in film and film is their medium. Does that mean digital won't have its Connie Hall or Janusz Kaminski? Of course not. I'm sure someone out there right now will utilize RED (which IMHO is the best digital camera you can get) to a point where it becomes the look to beat.
I believe in the digital acquisition model - it makes post processing more flexible. So if RED can bridge the gap between Vision2 and a sensor, more power to them.
