NJ Transit GP40PH-2 #4219 leaving Red Bank NJ with a 5 car train bound for Bay Head. GP40PH-2 #4219 was orginally numbered by NJ Transit as 4148. The locomotive was badly damaged in a head on collision in Secacus NJ on February 9th 1996 which killed both engineers. NJ Transit would rebuild the locomotive again after the accident and renumber it as 4219. The locomotive is not a GP40PH-2B.

  • @trainzrok Comet II 5146 was the cab car that was destroyed in the wreck.

  • my dad was working on a conrail train when that happend at kearny yard and he said he heard the impact of the crash

  • Love the sound! Sweet video!

  • The engine was renumbered because it was rebuilt to new again with new parts and transit was short on power at the time before they started buying the new stuff and they got tired of seeing the 4148 sitting in the so they sent it out to the junita shop in altoona,PA for a second rebuild.

  • thats sad, I remembered this accident in 1996 in Secaucus, it was on all over the news. Yeah I think he was Danny, IT said it on the news but don't remember, it was 12 years ago. Why did they renumber the engine.

  • GP-40 use in passenger carrier ,EMD is multiple use in US railways :)

  • I believe the engineer's name was Danny, I believe 5109 was a Cab Car involved. Name's are in both 4219 and 5109
