Lecture Title: "Mechanical Philosophy"

April 23rd, 2009

Professor Courtenay Raia lectures on science and religion as historical phenomena that have evolved over time. Examines the earlier mind-set before 1700 when into science fitted elements that came eventually to be seen as magical. THe course also question how Western cosmologies became "disenchanted." Magical tradition transformed into modern mysticisms is also examined as well as the political implications of these movements. Includes discussion concerning science in totalitarian settings as well as "big science" during the Cold War.

  • It's unspeakably hilarious to read the sexist fashion-related critiques left by some of the guys posting here. I mean, seriously, here's a brilliant person lucidly connecting the dots between 3 branches of human history and consciousness spanning a few thousand years of existence. It's one of the most clarifying and memorable lectures I've seen for neophytes. And you're criticizing her hat and clothing? Would you critique a male lecturer in the same way? How embarrassed I am for you! Ha ha...

  • 90% of people wish they could speak this coherently. Professor Raia is very fluid not only in speech, but in subject matter as well.

I wish we had teachers this good when I was in school.

    Great Job

    Peace........

  • She does a really fantastic job giving a snapshot of these ideas and showing how they contributed to the course of science. I like the part about Newton in particular, since I think that we tend to take Newton's realization for granted, since we grow up hearing about it all the time. But it's a crazy idea, isn't it? That two kinds of motion, objects falling to the ground and planets rotating around one another, are both described by the same law.

  • @wwjj2255 seriously? That's a fancy ass pant suit, probably costs more than most make in a month o.O

  • i love this lecture and her funky hats!!! you rock lady!!

  • @wwjj2255 - THANK YOU!!! I hate ambiguity too. If she was wearing a powdered wig - It would be perfectly obvious that she's an authority figure and I should respect her. Im glad male faculty are not allowed to wear business casual in academic settings.

  • Epis-te-mology ( pronunciation (help·info); from Greek ἐπιστήμη – epistēmē, "knowledge, science" + λόγος, "logos") or theory of knowledge is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge.[1] It addresses the questions:

... and the Age of Reason, finally.

    Merci infiniment!

  • Shes hot!

  • omg is that Jackie's hat?

  • This is a great course by a very capable and entertaining, and yes attractive professor! Who cares how she dresses? She's appropriate and she's got her own funky style. I'd love to have her as an instructor, and perhaps as a girlfriend as well!
