My computer animation entitled, To Be, represents the cycle of life and illustrates inner conflict within us all. In the beginning, there is a child-like puppet hanging in the air. After the arrival of a butterfly, the puppet is released and gains consciousness. The interactions between the butterfly and the puppet metaphorically represent human life: the beginning, the mid-life, and finally the end. It is impossible to sidestep this process, life continually evolves. In the animation the puppet has an inner-conflict within his subconscious. The original puppet represents the ego and within him lives the id and superego. When the butterfly flies into the original puppet's body, his superego shows the proud attitude toward the butterfly but still wants to have it. However, id, through violent means, wishes to control the butterfly which then results in a fight. As the puppet's id and superego battle it out within, the ego becomes aware of his inner-self. His inner-self reflects different characters and attitudes about life. In the end, the butterfly exits the inner self and sends the ego plummeting through space. This tumbling journey represents the puppet's death yet according to Taoism he will be reborn and this scenario will repeat again and again. The animation, To Be, ends exactly where it began, with the puppet hanging by strings in the air, waiting to be reborn.
