University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III receives the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award. The award is U.Va.'s highest honor.
President Casteen receives the award for his longtime service to the University. He is to step down as president on August 1, 2010, marking 20 years in this leading role. President Casteen previously served as dean of admission at the University, a position he held from 1975 to 1982, when he became Virginia's Secretary of Education. He holds three degrees from the University of Virginia.
Thomas Farrell, former rector of the University of Virginia, presented President Casteen with the award.
