Astonishing Alpine location photography and a young Robert Redford in one of his earliest starring roles are just two of the visual splendors of Michael Ritchie's visceral debut feature, DOWNHILL RACER. In a beautifully understated performance, Redford is David Chappellet, a ruthlessly ambitious skier competing with an underdog American team in Europe for Olympic gold, and Gene Hackman provides tough support as the coach who tries to temper the upstart's narcissistic drive for glory. With a subtle screenplay by acclaimed novelist James Salter, DOWNHILL RACER is a vivid character portrait buoyed by breathtakingly fast and furious imagery that brings the viewer directly into the mind of the competitor

  • @yosraz1 My friend, I can't see what my initial comment was about because the up loader has probably deleted it. If u remember what I had said, could you point it out again. ? Thank you...

  • @skiak13 The motions ... ? What do you mean when you use that particular clause ?

  • I love this movie.... Most ski racing movies are awesome but this takes it to the next level of the sport it self not just the motions

  • @sportingsails "How fast must a man go to get from where he's at?"

  • 1:25 - "Ya...You ski fast, but you're reckless, you never had any real education did you? All you ever had was your skis...and that's not enough." - EPIC!

  • @mossmiller This has always been 1 of my favorite movies for some reason. I don't know why, I mean there are obviously many better films. I just like cinematography, the scenes in the European towns, & the Porsche the girl drives. In that respect could care less if was about skiing or championship checkers. I just like the look of certain films from the 60/70's. This is 1. The DVD you speak of is the criterion collection edition? I LOVE to see films "the making of".

  • @mossmiller

But it's not professional, it's amateur, the Olympics

  • Smart sexy b-movie

  • Liked the look and tone of the movie. The loose storytelling and acting worked well. Camilla Sparv is smart and sexy.

  • roman polanski was supposed to direct this
