This video shows the purple "sticky" or "adhesion" gel I found on accident in the Portal 2 authoring tools. It turns out that the purple gel was initially going to behave like the blue stick paint in Tag: The Power of Paint (free download link below), the game off of which Portal 2's gel mechanics are based.
https://www.digipen.edu/studentprojects/tag/

The adhesion gel would have been in the game along with the repulsion, propulsion, and conversion gels in Portal 2 now. But some play testers got too disoriented when they had to think with portals while walking on walls and ceilings, so Valve ended up removing the gel before it was completed.

As this video demonstrates however, the incomplete adhesion gel still exists deep in the game's files. The purple blob texture is missing, as indicated by the black spots in the blobs, but the brush applied gel texture still renders properly as purple. Although now, in the Peer Review DLC update, it was replaced with a new white gel that has all of the properties of this adhesion gel, in addition to reflecting lasers like a mirror. See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6eaeZ3pzpQ

Because Valve removed this gel, it doesn't work quite right anymore. It doesn't let you walk on walls or ceilings. It just has a few remaining properties when interacting with propulsion gel. Objects coated in adhesion gel (which don't have a purple texture, but they still can be coated) won't slide along propulsion gel on the ground. Similarly, objects coated in propulsion gel won't slide along adhesion gel on the ground.

But it turns out Omnicoder actually did make it fully functional! Hopefully he will release it as a .vpk or something in the near future. See the video below.

  • um... which is the real gel? some other guy made a video saying the purple gel makes turrets and you say its sticky...WHICH OF YOU IS LYING?

  • @mrmanwithchocolate That other video was meant as a joke. Or maybe... (plot twist) this video is the joke...

But seriously, that other video was a joke. This one's legit.

  • I'm sure this has been asked before but, there seems to be two conflicting points in your theory. If the purple gel was canceled too early during development, how was it play-tested..?

Apologies in advance if this wasn't what you meant to imply.

  • @DemsClothsFoThrowin Any point during the beta could technically be considered early in development.

  • @BOB74j

One last thing... if you have to use each gel to get each corrupted core in the final boss (Space=Conversion, Adventure=Repulsion, Fact=Speed), does this also mean a fourth corrupted core was planned?

  • @Justinwa0309 I doubt the boss battle was finalized before the adhesion gel was removed, so probably not.

  • @inspectertaz You do know it's actually called conversion GEL, right?

  • @RileyPivot The fact that it was removed is saying that it was used only in beta versions of the game. Don't try to correct someone by saying exactly what they said.

  • @mrmanwithchocolate Portal Developers can a purple gel that would let people stick to walls. The testing gamer's thought it was nauseating to the point of vomiting, so they removed it. I don't know how they thought that, honestly, but... yeah.

  • This gel was removed in beta because it was too disorienting to use. It Was/Will be included in some expansion.

  • @mrmanwithchocolate i think its the turret purple gel

  • It's purple, because you edited a gel to not have a texture :P

In the source engine, when a model is drawn without a texture, it automatically draws with that pink/purple checkerboard pattern.

  • this is standart model for gel

purple - this is purpleblack error texture.

    ------

    your captain obvious

  • Wait a minute he says "theres no black spots" Yes there is. it just shifts alot because the entire thing is moving. the texture is missing, so please disregard my last comment. It is possible that the purple liquid spots for where it hit, is a texture for it that was included, because Maybe, the liquid IS supposed to be purple, but the default texture is purple also.
