Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713 - 1780) was born into a musical North German family. He ultimately settled in Leipzig, studying at the Thomasschule. He received instruction from Johann Sebastian Bach. This fugue bespeaks his admiration of the Master. Several composers have written organ works based on B-A-C-H, which translates into the notes B flat, A, C and B. (H, in German usage, is B natural.) This is one of the earlier such works. The fugue opens with the notes B-A-C-H.
