Essentially, I feel as if the government's only role as far as "leveling the playing field" goes, should be to provide equality in voting power. No more, no less. I am not entirely sure as to what you are arguing about however.... lol?

There seems to be some ambiguity between using the term "rights" to mean freedoms that exist regardless of a government acknowledging them, and "rights" to mean specifically something that the government upholds. To use your slave example; did slaves have the right to freedom while they were enslaved, and this right was being violated? Or did they only gain this right once they were freed? How does your answer to this question correlate to your assertion that "we can get new rights"?

@Chimneyfish00 Well, first off, I don't think "inalienable" and "innate" are synonymous. Rights are granted by the government. There are no rights in the natural order of things. It's a convenience of civilization.
In the slavery example, I'd say their rights were violated post hoc. An issue is brought to attention, and we debate as to whether or not a solution should be set in stone in the bill of rights or law, or if it's an issue at all.
