Host-Hello, All. We are here today with special guest Tidal Tommy, who will be talking to us about a renewable energy source call TIDAL ENERGY.

Tommy-Hello everybody as Ryan said I am here to talk to all of you about tidal energy. This is energy being harnessed by the movement of tides.

Host-Yes, but Tommy where in Canada is it used and how is this movement of tides made into electricity?

Tommy-Well Ryan in Canada the biggest tidal barrage plant is in the Bay of Fundy, which can be found between Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. As for converting it into energy there is 3 main systems. First is Tidal Fences, these bad boys are stretched the width of a lake, or river where the current pushes threw them, and spins a power generator. Second is Tidal Turbines, these are like wind turbines but are placed under water. When tides come in or out they spin the blades which again spin the generator. Lastly, the third method is Tidal Barrage Plants, this is the most used, it is place in a river or lake.

Host-Like before

Tommy-Yes like before, and holds water back until there is a huge build up than they open the doors.

Host-And the water comes down and again spins the generators. We get it, but are there any environmental disadvantages to Tidal Energy, and what about the advantages?

Tommy-Disadvantages would be things like destroying small ecosystems, and wreaking migration patters of small fish and birds. For advantages there are many things, like we have discovered that we can predict when high tides will be coming in and when low tides will be going out. Also theres tons and tons of water everywhere and we waste absolutely nothing!

Host- So theres some give and take but explain why Tidal energy is considered renewable

Tommy-Well Tidal energy is considered renewable because ITS NEVER GOING TO RUN OUT! Look at a map theres water everywhere, and even better yet it creates no harmful chemicals or waste.

Host- So I imagine this energy can be used by home owners, schools, and for transportation?

Tommy-You imagine right, but not completely, home owners and schools can use it but it would be inefficient to ship the energy inland, so for the people near the coast it would be great, and it can not fuel a car or airplane but it can certainly assist being a battery.

Host- Amazing, just amazing! So what percentage of Canadas electricity is generated by Tidal energy?

Tommy-Only about 10%

Host-Thats not very good, but we are running out of time, so a warm hand for Tidal Tommy, and until next time, Im you talk show host Ryan.
