The "Rule of Two" is a principle in the Order of the Sith which was introduced by Darth Bane. Every Sith desires power, so why should he share the power with his master (as soon as the master has nothing more to teach the apprentice)

sith are not as selfish as you think. some are selfish but they dont last long. The most powerful sith to ever live a long life cared about ideals that were beyound even them and they knew it to begin with. The goal of the sith is absolute power of the galexy. IF that means the master must die for the sith so be it. The rule of two was invented to keep sith from fighting each other all the time. There should only be 1 master and 1 apperentice. All others are soldiers and pawns.

if you were the only sith master in the galaxy and knew that you would die soon, you would want your apprentice to be strong, but to be able to surpass you, ensuring she would be able to survive and continue the sith tradition. only the strong survive in the sith.

While a quest for power is important to a Sith their main goal is the utter destruction of the Jedi Order/Republic. In the past many great Sith Lords created an army to do battle with the Jedi but all failed due to the in house fighting the Sith were known for. Such the Rule of Two was created so they could focus their attention on the Republic and Jedi. With only one student the master would know who was going to betray them instead of an entire group of Sith. (Part 1)

But the whole concept of the sith is a selfish quest for power by any means necessary, and to hell with the consequences. They think inward and only care about themselves. So why train your own replacement...your own executioner?

I ask this because i actually am a sith lord. I have the cold English accent and bad oral hygiene to prove it

    Rock on

It was also used to ensure the Sith would remain strong, hence the student trying to kill the Master. If the student failed they were weak and the Master would train another hopefully one strong enough to defeat said Master.

They cannot be completely selfish if they hold to this concept, for they are willing to sacrifice themselves so that those who follow may be more powerful than those before them. Indeed, it was said that an apprentice who failed to kill his master was considered a failure, and the master would take on a new apprentice until they found one powerful enough to take their place.

It seems the Sith are more complicated than we are led to believe.

ManinCognito didn't ask why a Sith apprenctice would kill their master, but why a Sith master would train an apprentice that would one day kill them.

It's a very good question. Darth Traya said that she hoped the Exile would strike her down and become more powerful than she herself would.

This suggests that we hold a misconception of the Sith.
