Fashion design is an exciting, fast-paced field in which some of America's most talented artists are working. Our experienced instructors show students that fashion design makes use of a great deal of academic knowledge, as well as creativity and attention to detail.

Week 1
Week 1: Basics of Sketching and Stitching
This is a great introduction to critical skills. In sketching, students learn how to develop and present their ideas on paper through drawing basic figures, drafting poses, and describing textures and details. In stitching, students learn the basic stitches used to piece together a garment and add simple details.

Week 2: Fashion Forecasting
There are people in fashion whose job it is to predict the must-haves for the coming season. In our class, students learn the tricks of the trade, examining current fashion trends and social factors to project fashion's future. Students apply these tools by developing market boards, style boards and swatch boards to present trend ideas. They also design and assemble a store display.

Week 3
Week 3: Silk-Screen: Design and Patterning
Silk-screening is a simple but endlessly useful technique for applying design and pattern to fabric. Students build their own silk-screening frames and gain experience with the technique. They learn about color, patterns and graphics, and they experiment on a variety of garments.

Week 4
Week 4: Project Centenary
Just as in the hit "Project Runway," we give students a task and equip them with the tools to carry it out. Students learn the basic skills for designing a garment, drawing inspiration from an array of unlikely sources, and integrating a variety of materials. Then, students are given a simple piece of clothing and a budgeted shopping trip, and it is up to them to make something fantastic!
