By our third year, most of us will have learned to count. Once we know how, it seems as if there would be nothing to stop us counting forever. But, while infinity might seem like a perfectly innocent idea, keep counting and you enter a paradoxical world where nothing is as it seems.

Mathematicians have discovered there are infinitely many infinities, each one infinitely bigger than the last. And if the universe goes on forever, the consequences are even more bizarre. In an infinite universe, there are infinitely many copies of the Earth and infinitely many copies of you. Older than time, bigger than the universe and stranger than fiction. This is the story of infinity.

  • About the statement that infinity perhaps "doesn't exist":

One has first to define the world existence in order to remain logically consequent. The possibility that infinity perhaps doesn't exist physically has nothing to do with mathematics. In mathematics we don't examine physical reality. Infinity exists however as a concept in mind and that's existence enough for mathematical investigation.

It is irrelevant wheter we can find infinity in real world or not. This is not what mathematics do.

  • @kickniko Could you send me more info on this from you perspective ???

  • I love how everytime i go to the next part of this show the view count drops. It's amusing to see how long people last before they give into confusion.

  • @The2012phenomneon it makes perfect sense to us that time should be eternal, because a begining without time doesn't make sense to us. But who is to say that the Universe should conform to our intuition?

  • I'm going to the bookies now and i'm gonna put a penny on a monkey writing shakespear.

  • What?

  • what the hell is with the kids? I wanna hear from scientists, not little kids.

  • @kickniko the only way to feel infinity is to meditate. Mathematics will never make you feel it, just almost grasp it without ever reaching it.

All infinities are contained into One consciousness. It's dynamic, multidimensional.

Mathematics do not include consciousness as the prequel to the universe yet. This is limiting their understanding power a lot. Consciousness ==> Intention ==> Potential energy becomes dynamic, movement ==> creation ==> complexion

    Namasté ;) Alain

  • My thoughts about infinity aside, from 1:21 - 1:56 sounds EXACTLY like a theist argument, one of those theist arguments I really, really hate.

  • Shakespeare and monkeys, Yeah that's gonna solve infinities. WTF?. 2 parts to go, but maybe i should have understood the nature of this program when the kids started counting numbers.

  • Monkeys rule!

  • @kickniko In mathematics we don't examine physical reality? I thought Mathematics was the language of the universe. Used to describe the universe in all its glory.
