December 16th 1944 saw the opening salvo of the Battle of the Bulge. In a last fanatical attempt to drive his war machine to the sea and turn the tide of the War, Adolf Hitler assembled a force of some 30 divisions to strike through the forested Ardennes mountian region of Belgum. To counter this attempt to split the American and British forces, The United States committed some 800,000 men and suffered over 19,000 killed. It was the costliest battle in American lives of World War 2.
