"Baby, you know how I feel about you crying. Don't do this," I breathed against the crown of her head. She didn't speak though. Her tears flooded into my shirt, drowning the material with all the fear and worry she had inside of her. My own eyes burned with the same fear. They worried that I'd lose her forever and they brimmed with water. I quickly looked up at the bland ceiling hoping to prevent their escape, but it was too late. One had already made it's way down my cheek and got lost in her hair.
"Baby," my voice struggled to stay strong, "Finish packing so we can get out of here, okay?"
Selena pulled away from my chest so very slowly, her eyes meeting with mine. My hands cupped the sides of her face to allow my thumbs to dry away those tears that were left behind.
"P-," she stopped and took a deep breath, "Promise me that we're going to be okay, Nick?"
"I promise," I replied.
Could I keep my promise?
I don't know.
After all the packing was done and we were decent, Selena carried Maddie downstairs as I hauled our luggage into the back of my car.
"Did you get the car seat?" Selena questioned as she stepped into the garage with Maddie cradled in her arms.
"Yeah," I replied, placing the last bag into the rear of the car, "It's already set up."
"Okay," Selena popped open the back door and laid our daughter down in her car seat. She worked quickly to secure Maddie in, then quietly shut the door and turned to me. "All set?"
I nodded, then followed up with a soft kiss.
I opened the door for Selena and she quickly climbed in, buckling up. Then, I strolled over to my side and hopped into the car.
I remained very cautious the entire ride, constantly checking in my mirrors for any car that was following for too long. Luckily, there was none in sight, but Selena had caught up to what I was doing. I heard her huff as she diverted her attention out her window.
"Everything's going to be fine, Selena," I breathed.
"You keep saying that, Nicholas, but I don't believe you!" she finally blurted out.
"So much for trust in a relationship," I growled.
"Trust?" she scoffed bitterly, "How can I trust you when you won't even tell me what's going on?!"
"I already told you that you can't know!" I yelled.
"And why not?!"
"I can't fucking tell you, Selena!" I looked over at her.
"Keep your eyes on the road, Nicholas!" and I quickly refocused on the road. "Nick, I hate it when you keep things from me! I figure after two years and a baby, you would trust me!"
"Baby, I do trust you. I do, but it has nothing to do with trusting you!"
"Then what, Nick?" her voice threatened to break again.
"Selena," I sighed.
"Just tell me."
"You really want to know?" I blinked, biting my lip.
"Please?"
"Sel, I...I owe people some money," I lied, "A lot of money."
"How much exactly?" her eyes rounded.
"A lot...and I haven't paid it off yet."
"So, pay it back, Nick! It's affecting our relationship, for God's sake!"
"I don't have the money, Sel!" I continued on with my lie.
"Dammit, Nick! How could you get involved with people like that?! Look at what they did to our house!" she cried.
"I know, Baby. I didn't want to tell you because of this. This argument right here. Those tears on your face. This was what I was trying to avoid." I sighed, pulling into a pharmacy parking lot. Selena looked around curiously, unsure of why we were here. Noticing the confusion on her face, I spoke, "Morning after pills."
"Oh!" she dragged, "Okay."
"I'll be back in a few, okay?" leaning in for a kiss. Selena returned the quick peck and I dried up the rest of the tears that stained her face.
