this is a rehearsal of Maracatu Nacao Estrela Brilhante de Igarassu in february 2007 in Igarrassu Pernambuco. One of the oldest maracatu nacaoes still in existance, dating from 1824. This baque has its own distinct style and swing. The matriarch is Dona Olga, singinging on the left, the mestre is Gilmar singing lead. Most members come from the same family. The are singing about the "black crown" a symbol of african solidarity and royalty and an assertion of their history. "a cruz do patrao" is a reference to a mechanism of torture used on the slaves in the port of Recife, where the tide would come in and "crown" ie drown, the captive slaves. I had many videos of this maracatu including some of the corte (very beautiful) but the were erased! If anybody has some let me know. Salve Dona Olga, Um abraco Rogerio amigao
