"This Guy's in Love with You" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and recorded by Herb Alpert. Although known primarily for his trumpet playing as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert sang lead vocals on this solo recording, arranged by Bacharach.

Alpert originally sang "This Guy's in Love with You" on a 1968 television special, The Beat of the Brass. In response to numerous viewer telephone calls, the song was released as a single and reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in June of that year, remaining in the top position for four weeks. It was not only Alpert's first #1 single, but it was also the first #1 single for his A&M record label. The song also spent ten weeks at #1 on the adult contemporary chart, which at the time was called the "Easy Listening" chart. For the single's B-side, Alpert chose "A Quiet Tear," an album track from his first album in 1962, The Lonely Bull.

Eleven years later Alpert would become the first (and only) artist to reach the top of the Hot 100 with both a vocal performance and an instrumental performance when "Rise" went to the top of the charts.

Artist - Herb Alpert
Song - This Guy's in Love With You 1968
(Lyrics)

You see this guy
This guy's in love with you
Yes, I'm in love

Who looks at you the way I do
When you smile, I can tell
We know each other very well
How can I show you I'm glad
I got to know you cause

I've heard some talk
They say you think I'm fine
Yes, I'm in love and what
I'd do to make you mine

Tell me now, is it so
Don't let me be
The last to know
My hands are shaking
Don't let my heart
Keep breaking cause

I need your love
I want your love
Say you're in love
In love with this guy
If not, I'll just die

Tell me now, is it so
Don't let me be
The last to know
My hands are shaking
Don't let my heart
Keep breaking cause

I need your love
I want your love
Say you're in love
In love with this guy
If not, I'll just die

  • Just so everyone knows, I am aware I mistakenly hit the wrong key

    in the word UNITED...Thank you

  • The lyrics you posted are a bit wrong in some places. One line in particular suggests that the main character is homosexual.

"Say you're in love and you'll be my guy, if not I'll just die"

  • @steelyross @steelyross You are 100% correct, and I like the way you presented the error. Most people are quite rude with mistakes. The information is not always accurate (lyrics and Wikipedia). I mention this on my homepage. I make so many music videos, it makes it impossible to watch everything. However, I have made the correction and want to thank you for having class bringing this to my attention.

  • This is the only song Herb Alpert ever sang. All his other work was instrumental type music. (just thought you'd like to know)

    Regards from Joe..

  • This was "Our song" back in 1969 when I met my husband. Still gives me shivers! I hope all those people are as happy now as I am 41 years later. A really beautiful video,

  • Very Cool Joe. I never knew that Herb and the Band sang or played this tune. I Love It!! Ricky..

  • @Tacitus3000 A belated *but heartfelt too, nonetheless* "Merry Christmas" to them, one and all....

  • A very special song and I so like the way it highlights all those great guys and women in uniform. I remember this song well from high school days. It always reminds me of Sue, a brown-haired, brown-eyed girl that I had an enormous crush on - wish I'd had the guts to tell her.

  • @timmmahhhh Yep. As far as I know, that's true even to this day.

Couldn't have happened to a better musician either, IMO.

  • @Babbarum3 They must be. And well said, sir.

  • The best expression that a soldier can express, prior to a deployment, and upon his safe return. Whether Korea, The Nam, Iraq, or Afgan. We know, our Ladies, where there with us. A military wife, is something very Special.

  • @TheBacmaster Actually here are two other exceptions I know of where Herb sings - Love IS from the Rise Album, and Quiereme Tal Como Soy from Fandango. But one unique fact about Herb is that he is the ONLY person to have #1 songs as a vocalist (this one) and a #1 instrumental (Rise).

  • Beginning about 0:56...I have to wonder if THIS military protocol doesn't take over:

"It is traditional, as the couple recess through the arch of swords, that the last two men to make up the arch lower their swords in front of the couple, detaining them momentarily, while the sword bearer on the right, with his sword, gives the bride a gentle "swat" on the rump and utters, "Welcome to the Army," or the appropriate branch of service."

I can see the soldier on the left approves of what follows.

  • I love this song...

Me recuerda a mi mama (L)

  • Great tune and very poignant with the pics. Nicely done!
