It's an amazing anime that's misunderstood by most and that's why it's even tossed aside but take the time to watch it as many times as it's needed to get to see what's really going on. It has a lot of symbolism, character development, and what's best is it makes you think, I mean actually think about your life, relationships, religion, friendships, our social structure, our ignorance as a collective, social stigma, I mean if you watch and understand just a bit it'll change your outlook on life.

one of the best endings ever made ~_^

Weird ... this ending theme wasn't in the version I saw. The episodes just ended. Was it only in the Japanese version or something?

@missingnote Bear pajamas are fanservice? Are you sure we're on the same page here? Teddy bear implies childlike mindset, and in Lain's case probably also comforting protection.
Anyway, Lain is one of the most asexual anime heroines that I know of, and I really don't see fanservice value in any of her scenes.
-
@Lightice1 Of course not all anime goes for fanservice; quite a few do. It could be said about anyone that their clothing reflects their emotional state, so it's not like that's special to Lain. Yes, she feels safe in her electronic world, and has no problems sleeping nude in a massive tangle of cables. That's all fine, makes perfect sense. But it still doesn't change that they added it at least partially for fanservice, as well as the bear pajamas. There are other ways to express her emotions.
-
@missingnote Not all anime has fanservice. Nor does all nudity have to be fanservice for that matter. I seriously can't see how this scene is supposed to be titillating for example. Lain's emotional state is expressed by her clothing, and the ending shows her in an environment she feels perfectly safe in, so she doesn't need the psychological layers of protection.

@HecticMuffin Because it makes the anime sell more, marketing genius. Almost everyone likes fanservice. It sells. That's why it exists. Is that really that difficult a concept that sex sells? Or do you need more explanation?
-
@missingnote What makes you think all anime needs to have fanservice? There's somethin perverted about you.

Lain is beautiful <3
