The Sub Ice ROV'er, short SIR, is a new technological toy, which will significantly expand the possibility for researchers to explore subglacial environments in Antarctica, Greenland and other icy environments. The SIR is a Remotely Operated underwater Vehicle (ROV) that is deployable through a narrow ice borehole. Its onboard instrumentation will allow mapping of subglacial lakes and water filled cavity, deciphering climatic and environmental records in subglacial sedimentary deposits and collect a variety of samples (ice, water, sediment and biological samples) from the icy environment beneath kilometer thick glacial ice.
