I had a request through YouTube to talk about generators and particles. These are both computer-generated elements that can be added to your video in motion 5 that you have complete control over. Because they are generated frame-by-frame when your video is rendered, you can change their various attributes including colours and behaviours. This video shows a very quick introduction to the concepts behind generator and particle elements and creates a simple title using one of each. Iapos;ll get more complex in future episodes.

  • Worth looking at too. The best results come from customising settings, but it takes a while to work out what does what!

  • Preview render is command-R. This just renders to RAM so it plays back nicely - in theory.

  • The rendering simply places a copy of the rendered video into the computer's memory. The theory is that it should be able to play back faster from there than the hard disk. However, it is still at the mercy of any high-CPU applications that are running. If something is hogging other resources, playback will still be slow. Also, playing back uncompressed HD is challenging for a desktop machine. Once it's compressed to H.264 (mp4) it's much easier. I still get FPS drops here and there :-)

  • Thanks very much! Happy to keep making them. I'm learning a lot too :-)
