To answer your question, this doesn't really refer specifically to his lyrics. He has been married 7 times, and was known around Nashville for infidelity. He also wrote love for a lot of different women (wives and girlfriends), which tend to be romantic but also recognize his own failings. To be fair, he has only been married once since he got clean (from drug addiction) in 1995.

Listen to his "Fearless Heart," "Poison Lovers," "Valentines Day" and, his best, "Goodbye" to get an idea.
