Author Jean Palmer Heck discusses who needs to be involved in difficult conversations at work. Should it be just the boss and employee? Or are others essential for security and legal purposes? This is part 3 in a series about getting clarity before you meet with the other person and have the Tough Talk™.
------
This video is from a speech on conflict resolution delivered to the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies
When an employee is reprimanded or let go, there are many people involved in the aftermath of the discussion. Ask yourself: Who is impacted by it? In the case of mutual insurance companies, the "who" are your policy holders, your agents, your boards of directors.
Many people are involved in employee conflicts.
Do you need to have a witness? Who must be present in a conversation in which an employee is terminated? What are the legal and safey issues?
Do you have an HR person in your office? Is there an employee assistance program that you might have, or have access to?
Would that help in this situation?
One of the psycho therapists that I interviewed for "Tough Talks in Tough Times" What Bosses Need to Know to Deliver Bad News, Motivate Employees & Stay Sane" raised this question: "Who do you want to be?" Who do you want to be in this particular situation, in this job, and in this world?
